Kinky Girls From Big Cities Screen "Darling I Want You" in Laurel Canyon

For the premiere of “Darling I Want You,” the band’s new music video shot entirely on 16mm film. Kinky Girls From Big Cities hosted the screening at their own house, inviting friends, collaborators, and listeners into the same neighborhood that helped shape the imagery behind the release. Shot among the secluded hills and historic ruins of Laurel Canyon, “Darling I Want You” makes full use of the imperfect beauty of 16mm. The grain, shifting color, and flashes of California light give the video the feeling of something discovered rather than newly produced a reel pulled from an unlabeled box and projected decades later. It is less interested in recreating the past than inhabiting it. The premiere also reflected the increasingly self contained universe Kinky Girls From Big Cities have built around it's fan forum. The band records its own material, creates its visual language, stages its own events, and releases physical editions on its own terms. Even the decision to screen the video at home felt significant: the setting wasn’t simply a backdrop or a piece of mythology borrowed for the night. It was where the work had actually been taking shape.
